How to Get Your Brand to Appear in ChatGPT
To appear in ChatGPT, your brand has to sit in the pages ChatGPT can search and quote: your own site and the comparison pages, reviews and threads it already reads. ChatGPT names products from two places: what the model learned in training, and live ChatGPT search, which turns a buyer question into one or more web queries and reads the results. OpenAI's help pages say those queries can go to Bing. There is no public switch that lists a company on ChatGPT. The work is to be findable, quotable and already present on the sources the answer uses.
How ChatGPT picks brands (training vs search)
A buyer asking "best invoicing tool for a ten-person studio" does not get a page of blue links. They get a shortlist. How to appear in ChatGPT is the work of being one of those names.
Training is the snapshot the model learned from. Well-known products can be named from memory this way. That knowledge has a cut-off date, and the model cannot point to a page that proves a sentence.
Search is live reading. OpenAI documents ChatGPT search as turning a request into one or more search queries, retrieving results, and writing an answer with source links (ChatGPT search for Enterprise and Edu). The same help page says those queries may be sent to Bing. The launch post says ChatGPT search also uses third-party search providers and partner content (Introducing ChatGPT search).
Those extra queries matter. One buyer sentence often becomes several lookups: the category, a couple of alternatives, pricing, a constraint such as country or team size. Google documents a similar move for AI Overviews and AI Mode and calls it query fan-out: several related searches across subtopics (AI features and your website). OpenAI does not use that name. It does say ChatGPT can run more than one query. If you only match the exact words the buyer typed, you can still miss the sub-queries.
| Source of the name | What ChatGPT can use | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Training | A brand the model already "knows" from older text | Keep a clear, consistent description on your site and on third-party pages so new runs have something current to quote |
| ChatGPT search | Pages returned for one or more web queries, often via Bing | Make your website appear in ChatGPT search: crawlable HTML, facts in the first lines, pages that match buyer questions |
| Cited sources | Listicles, reviews, Reddit threads, directories the answer already opens | Get your brand mentioned on those pages, not only on your homepage |
Free AI visibility check
Before you rewrite pages, ask the questions your buyers already type and see who gets named. Most of those questions should not contain your brand. "Best X for Y", "X vs Y", "alternatives to X" and "what does X cost" show discovery. A branded question only shows how you are described.
You can do a first pass by hand. The faster start is the free AI visibility check: enter your site, read who one surface names today, keep the questions. One run is a snapshot. Answers move.
If ChatGPT already names you, read the sources under the answer. Those domains are the ones to keep and to appear on. If it names only competitors, you have a list of pages and brands to work against, not a verdict that "AI does not know us".
Make your website appear in ChatGPT search
OpenAI's publisher FAQ says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, and that blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps you out of summaries and snippets (Publishers and developers FAQ). The crawler docs say the same in product language: OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search; GPTBot is the training crawler; ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a user asks ChatGPT to open it (Overview of OpenAI crawlers). Allowing search and blocking training is a documented, independent choice.
A robots.txt allow is not enough if a firewall or bot-protection rule drops the user agent first. If ChatGPT cannot fetch your pricing page, it will describe you from other sites, or skip you.
- Allow OAI-SearchBot (and ChatGPT-User if you want on-demand fetches). Decide GPTBot separately. Check the live docs before you edit rules.
- Put the facts in HTML: what you sell, who it is for, the price model, the stack. Many crawlers do not run JavaScript the way a browser does.
- Answer one buyer question per page, in the first lines. Vague claims ("the leading platform") give the model nothing it can repeat.
- Keep pricing, integrations and "who it is for" consistent everywhere they appear. A contradiction is something the model has to resolve, often by trusting a third party.
- Show a last-updated date on pages that change. Outdated prices and features get repeated as if they were still true.
- Add Organization, SoftwareApplication or Product schema that matches the visible page. Schema is not a ranking switch. It reduces guesswork about who you are.
- Be findable in the index ChatGPT search already queries. OpenAI's Enterprise and Edu help page says search queries may go to Bing, so a page Bing cannot index is a page search may never retrieve.
Get mentioned on cited sources
To get your brand mentioned in ChatGPT, your own site is one voice. A "best X" question often retrieves a page that already compares several products. That is why listicles, review sites and community threads show up as sources.
Look at the sources your baseline already surfaced. Work on those domains first. A mention on a site nobody retrieves for your prompts does not move the answer. Never treat a company's own blog as a third-party mention.
Reviews: a complete profile whose facts match your site, in the category you actually sell. Reddit and communities: useful, specific answers in threads buyers already use. Roundups: inclusion in a comparison that covers your category, written by someone else.
You cannot control a thread. You can be present and accurate when someone asks for alternatives.
GEO for B2B SaaS
People who already have a name for this work call it GEO (generative engine optimization): being named inside the answer, not only ranked on a results page. You do not need the acronym to do the job. For a B2B SaaS team the job is concrete: appear when a buyer asks what to use, with a reason that matches what you sell.
The pages ChatGPT quotes for those prompts are rarely the homepage hero. They are pricing, integrations, comparisons, docs or use cases, and security. The full walkthrough is in GEO for SaaS.
Write the questions in the language your buyers use, with their constraints (country, team size, stack, industry). Twenty to thirty unbranded prompts is enough to see where you are absent. Then fix one theme at a time.
Tracking across Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, AI Overviews
ChatGPT is the surface most teams start with. Buyers also open Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews / AI Mode. A good ChatGPT week says nothing about the others. Google's AI features sit on Google's index and may fan a question out into several searches. Perplexity shows sources by default. Each assistant is its own scoreboard.
Sauror measures whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI name a brand. Measurement runs every two weeks. Claude is optional: it is counted only if you select it, not by default. Track is 10 EUR the first month, then 60 EUR per month, excluding VAT.
If you have no baseline yet, run the free AI visibility check. It is one surface and one pass. Ongoing tracking repeats the same questions.
Questions
- How do I appear in ChatGPT search results?
- Let OAI-SearchBot read your HTML, publish pages that answer buyer questions in the first lines, and earn mentions on the third-party pages ChatGPT already cites. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps you out of summaries and snippets.
- How do I make my business or website appear in ChatGPT?
- There is no form that lists a company on ChatGPT. Be findable in ChatGPT search (crawlable pages, often via Bing) and present on the comparison and review pages the answer retrieves. Start with the free AI visibility check.
- How do I get my brand mentioned in ChatGPT?
- Write unbranded buyer prompts, see which sources the answer cites, then fix your own pages and those sources. Mentions and citations are not the same: you can be named without a link, or linked without being recommended.
- Can I get my company listed on ChatGPT?
- ChatGPT does not publish a public listing product for brands. Ads, where they exist, are a separate surface from an organic recommendation in a buyer answer. The practical path is still pages and third-party mentions. See GEO for SaaS.
- Is this the same as GEO for SaaS?
- GEO is the name some teams use for being named in AI answers. This page is the ChatGPT version in plain words. The full SaaS checklist (prompts, pages, share of voice) is in GEO for SaaS.
