Why Does ChatGPT Recommend My Competitors Instead of Me?
ChatGPT recommends your competitors instead of you when they are easier to name for the question the buyer typed: they sit in the pages search retrieves, or they already live in the model's training data, and you do not. A high Google rank does not put you on that shortlist. The useful next step is not a screenshot. It is an AI visibility checker on the same buyer questions, then work on the sources those answers already cite.
How ChatGPT recommends
How ChatGPT recommends businesses is not a public ranking formula. OpenAI does not publish a scoreboard of brands. What it does document is how an answer is built when search is on.
For product and pricing questions, ChatGPT can search the web. OpenAI's help pages say it turns the request into one or more search queries, reads the results, and writes an answer with links (ChatGPT search for Enterprise and Edu). Those queries may go to Bing. The launch post adds third-party search providers and partner content (Introducing ChatGPT search).
How ChatGPT recommends products, then, is usually: retrieve pages that already discuss several options, then write a shortlist from what those pages say, plus whatever the model already knew from training. If a competitor is on the retrieved pages and you are not, they are the easy name to write.
The same prompt can name different brands on the next run. Country, language and whether search ran also change the answer. One miss is a snapshot, not a diagnosis.
They're in the sources it reads
Open the sources under a ChatGPT answer that skipped you. The usual pattern is a handful of third-party pages: a "best of" list, a review site, a Reddit thread, a marketplace or a comparison article. Those pages already name two or three products. Your competitor is on them. You are not.
Your homepage can be excellent and still lose. A recommendation question needs a page that discusses several options. Vendor sites are one voice. Retrieval often prefers the comparison.
This is also why "we published a blog post about AI" rarely moves the shortlist. The post is on your domain. The answer is reading someone else's list.
| What you see | What it usually means | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| A competitor is named, you are not | They appear on the pages ChatGPT retrieved, or in training memory | Save the cited domains. Get an accurate mention there before you write another homepage section |
| You are named, but the reason is wrong | The model quoted an outdated or third-party description | Align pricing, who it is for, and integrations on your site and on those same sources |
| You rank on Google for the topic | Google rank is a different scoreboard | Check whether those ranking pages are the ones ChatGPT actually opened |
| The answer changes the next day | Search results and generation vary | Measure a rate across the same prompts, not one screenshot |
Clearer positioning
Sometimes you are in the retrieved pages and still lose the sentence. The model has to pick two or three names and a reason for each. A vague page ("the all-in-one platform") gives it nothing it can repeat. A competitor who says "invoicing for studios under fifteen people, from X EUR, works with Y" is easier to recommend.
Write one page per job you actually sell. Say who it is for, who it is not for, what it costs, and what it integrates with, in the first lines, in HTML. Keep the same facts on G2, directories and the roundups already in your sources.
Honest X vs Y pages help. A page that only praises you is easy to ignore. A page that states differences is something an answer can use.
Google rank ≠ AI recommendation
SEO and ChatGPT recommendations share crawlable pages. They do not share a scoreboard. Google ranks URLs. ChatGPT writes a paragraph and usually names a handful of products.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on Google's index and may use query fan-out: several related searches across subtopics (AI features and your website). ChatGPT search is a different retrieval path, documented as one or more queries that may go to Bing. Ranking for a keyword on Google does not mean ChatGPT opened that URL.
You can win the results page and lose the shortlist. You can also be named in ChatGPT while your organic rank is ordinary, if a third-party page that search retrieved already lists you. Treat them as two measurements.
Can you pay to be recommended?
There is no public product that sells an organic place in a ChatGPT recommendation. OpenAI documents ads as a separate surface: OAI-AdsBot visits landing pages submitted as ads (Overview of OpenAI crawlers). That is advertising, not a paid slot inside "best X for Y".
How can ChatGPT recommend my business, then? The same way it already recommends others: be on the pages it retrieves, be described clearly enough to quote, and let OAI-SearchBot read you. Nobody outside OpenAI knows the exact mix of training, retrieval and generation. Anyone who sells a guaranteed mention is guessing.
The practical path is in GEO for SaaS: buyer prompts, the pages assistants quote, third-party mentions, and a repeating measurement.
Questions
- Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor?
- Because that competitor is easier to name for the question: they appear in the pages ChatGPT search retrieved, or they are already in training data. Open the sources under the answer and see who is listed there.
- How does ChatGPT recommend businesses and products?
- When search is on, it turns the question into one or more web queries, reads the results, and writes a shortlist. OpenAI's search help says those queries may go to Bing. Training memory can still add a well-known name.
- How can ChatGPT recommend my business?
- Be on the pages the answer already reads, describe what you sell in a sentence a model can quote, and let OAI-SearchBot fetch your HTML. The walkthrough is in GEO for SaaS.
- Does a number-one Google rank get me recommended?
- No. Google rank and ChatGPT mentions are different scoreboards. You still need crawlable pages. You also need to be in the specific results ChatGPT opened for that prompt.
- How do I audit this without guessing?
- Use an AI visibility checker. The free AI visibility check is one surface and one run. Ongoing tracking repeats the same questions every two weeks on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI.
